Disney's Coronado Springs Resort Review: Moderate with a Deluxe Tower
A Southwestern-themed moderate resort near Animal Kingdom that gained Deluxe rooms in 2019 with the Gran Destino Tower. Best for guests who want pool, dining variety, and a slightly less-trafficked feel than the headliner Disney resorts.
On this page
Disney’s Coronado Springs is a Southwestern US / Mexican-themed moderate resort opened in August 1997, located near Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. It’s also the only Disney moderate resort with attached Deluxe-tier rooms — the Gran Destino Tower opened in July 2019 with 545 rooms and suites at higher price points than the rest of the resort. That dual-tier structure makes Coronado Springs flexible for parties that want different room categories under one reservation.
The resort
Coronado Springs is one of Disney’s largest resorts — 1,921 rooms spread across the 22-acre Lago Dorado lake. The original moderate sections are organized into three villages:
- Casitas — Spanish colonial / urban village styling, walking-closest to the convention center
- Ranchos — rustic Western American Southwest theming
- Cabanas — beach-village styling with closer pool access
The Gran Destino Tower sits at the resort’s main entrance with all 15 floors of Deluxe-tier rooms, suites, and the resort’s most polished dining options. Rooftop access to Toledo – Tapas, Steak & Seafood delivers some of the best non-Magic Kingdom park views on property.
Rooms
Standard moderate-tier rooms are approximately 314 square feet — sleeps up to 4, two queen beds (some king-only rooms available, plus 99 wheelchair-accessible rooms). The bathroom layout has a single sink at the vanity, which is smaller than the dual-sink setup at sister moderate resorts (Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans).
Standard amenities: flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, coffee maker, iron and ironing board, in-room safe, free Wi-Fi, and a small table with two chairs. Cribs and bed rails available on request.
The Gran Destino Tower rooms are larger (~375 sq ft), with sweeping views of Lago Dorado, Magic Kingdom in the distance (north-facing rooms), and the EPCOT/Hollywood Studios skyline. Standard tower rooms have walk-in showers (no tub) and a more contemporary design than the original villages.
Dining
Coronado Springs has the strongest restaurant lineup of any Disney moderate, thanks to the Gran Destino Tower additions:
- Three Bridges Bar & Grill at Villa del Lago — table-service restaurant on a platform in the middle of Lago Dorado, accessible by three lit bridges. Sunset views are exceptional.
- Toledo – Tapas, Steak & Seafood — Gran Destino Tower’s rooftop signature restaurant; Spanish-influenced menu with a strong cocktail program and rooftop views.
- Maya Grill — table service, Latin American breakfast and dinner
- El Mercado de Coronado — food court / Mercado-style quick-service with multiple stations
- Café Rix — coffee, breakfast, and grab-and-go snacks
- Dahlia Lounge — Gran Destino Tower’s rooftop bar (same level as Toledo)
- Laguna Bar — lakeside lounge
- Siestas Cantina — Dig Site poolside bar
Pools and recreation
The Dig Site is the resort’s main pool — a five-acre complex centered on a 50-foot Mayan pyramid with a 123-foot waterslide descending from the pyramid’s side, plus a hot tub, kiddie splash area, an arcade, and the pool bar (Siestas).
Each of the three villages also has its own quiet pool with hot tub access. Boats and bikes can be rented at the marina; 2-hour fishing excursions on Lago Dorado are bookable through the resort.
The Coronado Health Club has a full gym and the resort’s full-service Casa de Belleza salon offers haircuts, manicures, facials, and spa services.
Transportation
Coronado Springs has standard Disney bus service to all four theme parks, both water parks, and Disney Springs. No Skyliner access — buses are the only Disney transportation. Bus routes can be slower than at Skyliner-connected resorts (Caribbean Beach, Riviera, Pop Century, Art of Animation).
Who it’s best for
- Adult travelers and couples who want a quieter resort experience — Coronado Springs draws fewer families with young children than the headliner moderates
- Convention attendees — the resort’s 95,000 sq ft convention center is the largest at any Disney World hotel and pulls steady business traffic
- Mixed-budget parties — book Gran Destino Tower rooms for the adults and standard rooms for the kids’ group, all under one reservation
What to know before booking
- It’s large. The walk from the farthest Ranchos building to the Three Bridges restaurant is roughly 15 minutes. Internal shuttle buses help, but consider requesting a Gran Destino Tower or Cabanas room for shorter walks.
- Convention crowds. If a major convention is in residence during your stay, expect business attire in the lobby and busier elevators. Look up the convention calendar before booking if this matters.
- The pool atmosphere is fantastic — Dig Site is one of the better moderate pools on property.
